The Parsippany-Troy Hills School District is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Education's Carol M.White Physical Education Program(P.E.P.) Grant. The goal of the grant is to assist the school district by providing us with $400,000 to expand and improve our physical education and health program.
We created a "Wellness for Life" program to teach students to monitor their personal fitness and to align the physical education and health programs with state standards. Using P.E.P. grant funds, our district has purchased new technology to help students develop their own personal fitness plan. The technology includes Tri-fit hardware and software, hand-held computers for physical educators, new computers for the Middle School P.E. teachers, heart rate monitors and some strength equipment for a wellness center at our school.
Students will be taught how to track their fitness progress by collecting data from their heart rate monitors and entering it into personal risk appraisals. Students will learn to improve and maintain their personal fitness levels.
Students will strap on heart rate monitors to gather heart rate data, which can be downloaded into a computer program creating a comprehensive fitness report. Students will not be compared to normative standards or to one another; rather, they will be able to clearly monitor their progress toward fitness over time.
Your child will have the opportunity to purchase their own heart rate monitor strap if they choose to. All straps used during class will be sanitized between classes using the sanitizing protocols recommened by the manufacturer.
If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your child's physical educator or the Supervisor of Health and Physical Education, Linda Guerrini (973-263-7180 ext. 7249).
As a result of this program, we anticipate:
- students will increase their participation in physical activity outside of school
- the new technology will help students to better understand the importance of fitness
- students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to implement a fitness plan
As a health and physical education department we are committed to the premise that physical activity helps our students succeed academically. We are working to give your children the tools and opportunities they need to live healthier lives now and well into the future.
