Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL is the process through which individuals gain and effectively apply the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, establish positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, form and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The five core competencies of SEL include: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Students' social, emotional, and behavioral needs are key factors when considering their academic growth and challenges throughout middle school. Adolescence can be a vulnerable time for many, and it is important that we work as a community to help our students gain the necessary SEL skills for success. At Brooklawn Middle School, we greatly value the importance of SEL and fostering a positive school climate for students.

Considering the unprecedented time we are living in, many may experience various social-emotional challenges, making it difficult to meet academic standards. As a community, we must be mindful of potential challenges students may experience, and how their mental health may be affected.

As always, please reach out to your guidance counselors and/or teachers for support. In addition, Ms. Salkin is a new school social worker at Brooklawn Middle School working with the guidance department. She is here to provide interventions such as 1:1 counseling, small group sessions, and/or community referrals for students who may benefit from additional support.
